BRAZILIAN CONTEMPORARY ARTIST

One of the purposes of art is a communication within the society. The very original voice in contemporary Brazilian art has Adriana Varejão. Her practice comprises painting, sculpture, photography and installation. Her sources are many - baroque art, colonial history, architectural ruins, natural sciences and theatre. She is known for her addressing themes of racism and colonialism, she loves to focus on what happens when diverse cultures meet.

Adriana Varejão explains her vision: “I’m interested in the idea of a melange of countries, and absorbing culture. The work doesn’t have to answer questions, the work has to produce questions." Thus, the artist tries to speak with the public and ask questions through her artworks.
